An Austin Original

El Patio Restaurant maintains a long tradition started by Paul C. Joseph in 1954 who was one of Austin’s early pioneers in the Mexican food business. His policy “merely to serve the best” is still carried on today by family and their loyal staff who have worked at El Patio for over 30 years.

Thank you for your patronage and we look forward to serving you for many years to come.

100% Fresh Daily

Fresh Ingredients

At El Patio in Austin we take pride in the quality of our service and the quality of our ingredients. Nothing is frozen and every dish we serve is made fresh right at the time of your order. Whether is it one of our tasty appetizers or your favorite entrée, you will taste the difference only the best ingredients make in all of our dishes. It is this pride we take in our service and menu selection along with our commitment to quality that has made El Patio Austin’s favorite Tex-Mex restaurant for many years.

We use only 90/10 taco meat and freshly diced chicken meat cooked each day and topped with Land O Lakes cheese. Our taco shells are made right here in house, and our flour tortillas and crispy chips are made specially for us by local vendors right here in Austin. One of our most popular specialties are our hand rolled enchiladas. They are mouthwatering and hand rolled for you at each order just like your abuela used to make.

Pair your appetizers and entrée with one of our ice cold lime, mango, or strawberry margaritas. We also have a fine selection of American and Mexican beers. You can also choose from our selection of wines to compliment your meal. We also have a variety of soft drinks you can choose from and our homemade coconut praline is not to be missed for dessert. El Patio hasn’t forgotten about our little diners. We have a children’s menu for our guests 10 and under.

No matter what you’re craving off of our Tex-Mex menu, you can be sure that each ingredient has been carefully selected and is the freshest available. We don’t use off brands and take pride in serving only the highest quality food and beverages to you, our loyal customers. Our motto of “only the best” truly is reflected in the tasty food and fast friendly service you will experience at your next visit to El Patio in Austin.

I've eaten at El Patio,, my entire existence, my parents took me there, as a child.. I dined there as a young man, took my wife, and kids there.. A Tradition, I had heard that El Patio Restaurant had sold out/cashed in, then I heard it closed down.. Driving. Past El Patio 8-26-2020, I could see it was plainly open, not closed at all.. I was hungry so I stopped.. I don't know the new owners, or their. history.. I can tell you the food, and service was excellent.. In fact better than the previous owners, and they were an institution here in ATX... I will definitely be going back toEl Patio Restaurant soon... The atmosphere was laid back, and hip.. The Staff friendly, helpful, and professional...The Food was some of the best Mexican Food I've eaten in at least the last five years... Big Shout Out to the Chef, and the Crew in the Kitchen...

This was my first time visiting El Patio since it first closed the doors back in 2019. Now that it's reopened under new owners it still has the original decor and charm that it always did. The menu has also remained the same as far as I can tell. It's still good Tex Mex food but is getting a little pricey considering what you get. That's understandable with the way Austin's rent is going through the roof. Nonetheless, it's an Austin institution that everyone should visit at least once if not more.

In April 1961, I was an 18 year old prospective UT student making my first trip to Austin with two Fort Worth high school buddies doing the same. It was Round Up weekend on Campus and we were driving north on the Drag looking for a place to eat lunch. The El PatioSign caught our attention and we pulled in. We were met at the front counter by Mr. Paul Joseph as if we were old friends and regular customers. Not surprisingly, after consuming a full sleeve of saltines with hot sauce—along with three Enchilada Dinners, we immediately became old friends and regular customers! Total check: less than $5 including 3 iced teas! Now, almost 60 years later, this is still my favorite place in Austin eat. That also goes for my three grown children and six grandkids. Thank you El Patio and Joseph Family for “keeping it real”!Joe K. Longley

This was my first time going here and I was pleasantly surprised. Their take on tacos is unique in the fact that it's more like a tostada than a taco but still good.Enchiladas were ok but their chips and salsa were the MVP of the dining experience! I'd definitely recommend giving them a try if you're in the Austin area.

An Austin institution that almost closed its doors this year is still serving up its brand of texmex. I don’t know were the saltine crackers went but you will either love or not care about the chips - I’m in the love category. I also love their cheese enchiladas - smothered in a meat gravy they are some of the best in Austin. Fair warning, the beef enchiladas have cheese in them which is not normal at any other restaurant.Unfortunately, the other item a texmex restaurant is judged by is the margarita and I chose to pay the extra $2 for the “el patio” version which is supposed to have better tequila. It was sour beyond reason and while it starts off tasting like every good margarita the sourness kicks in a few seconds later and makes ya wonder if anyone behind the bar is tasting their creations before they send them out.We had an easy parking experience on a Saturday night at 6pm but I know it gets difficult with the limited spaces they have.

Growing up my parents and sisters and I used to go to a place we called "Mr. Josephs" because Mr. Joseph was my Daddy's friend and he owned the place. All these years later - Mr. Joseph's children are honoring their parents by running the restaurant like the parents did - keeping in place the quality food, and the charming personal service ... For me, it was like stepping back in time. It is not a new, fancy, well lit, sterile, chain restaurant - it has personality!! You will not find tofu & kale stuffed in a spinach wrap - attempting to call itself a taco - what you will find is hot, fresh, old fashioned - traditional TexMex - you know the kind that belongs in Austin (back before it was weird and you could actually afford to live in the city) but I digress... Try a combo plate - the taco was really good - guacamole was excellent and the cheese enchiladas unbeatable! and praline - don't forget the praline.. People new to Austin may not understand but long time native Austinite's will be in heaven. There is a reason they have been in business for 65+ years - I only hope they continue at least another 65 years!!

The tortilla on my enchiladas was hard compared to my wifes. We ordered same things. When i got drink refills i would say thank you and waitress continually said " no problem" ....i would think " your welcomed" would be correct response. Overall good just not the same as when David was the owner. We will give it another try.

Haven't been here in 15+ years. Food was still good even after closing and re- opening, but we paid $7 for a kids cheese quesadilla, with no sides. I also decided to try the $14 "GRANDE" El patio margarita, it is not "GRANDE" nor was it any better than the $7 house rita my wife had. In the end, glad it's back open but prices are too high and service was just OK.

We had a wonderful meal at this Austin original with friends. Service was really good and the food was great. The simple menu provides all the tex-mex standards and the consensus of the table was all dishes were prepared excellent and met all our expectations. Well done!BTW, there is a neon sign behind the bar that gives a "coded" message as to why their food tastes so fresh...it reads "W.G.O.O.M" - we grind our own meat. So now you know the rest of the story 😁

I will miss El Patio and the entire El Patio family who have been serving amazingly awesome homegrown Tex-Mex. After many years of living in Houston as a kid where my Dad found a great Tex-Mex restaurant where the chef's food was just like this. When I went to El Patio after my Dad passed, I could not believe who I felt like my folks where sitting right across to me and we were enjoying consistently prepared Tex-Mex as it should be. Cold plate with taco shell, chili con queso and avocado salad... THEN THE HOT PLATE with the melt in your mouth enchiladas with rice and beans. Oh, did I mention the chips, salsa and queso??? Well, those items are just the best. Completed meal with praline.IT does NOT GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS! Again, why for me, El Patio will be very sorely missed. I wish all the family of El Patio great journeys and newfound places to spread the delishishness... Tex-Mex style! <3 <3

I flew in from Vegas to eat here before they closed their doors. My grandparents ate here when my dad and uncles were at UT, I grew up eating here. It's the best family restaurant and it's heartbreaking that it's closing.

It was absolutely delicious. Due to their closing we had a long wait but so worth it. Sorry they are closing but we all deserve a time for other enjoyments. Best wishes.

I will miss this place. I can't believe that this TexMex food is something that I have grown to like. This quirky Austin establishment has a 'cheese sauce' added to most dishes and normally I would hate that. The salsa is homemade and awesome(I ask for extra and pour it all over my food)! They have an amazing staff who always make the experience greater(specifically Manny but they are all good). I almost always ordered the David special (two tacos and two enchiladas). Their beans and salsa are the highlights but somehow this mixture of crispy taco shells (again homemade) and TexMex enchiladas smothered in beans and 'cheese sauce' works great together. El Patio will be missed.

Noooooooo!!!!! How can we live without your enchiladas and tacos? We courted there once a week and over 1,000 times since! No one compares to your divine Tex Mex. You have been friends since 1976. We will no longer have a place to call our own, nothing to lure us back to our home city. David, can I get your enchilada sauce recipe? No one else holds a chance against yours.Al and Belinda

Nothing but great memories and I will love and miss all of you. My mother introduced me to this place as a child and Its been a staple since.. nothing extra fancy just good ol tex-mex food that been perfecting on keeping it classic and providing family love and nothing like the hipster wave going on everywhere else today that is rapidly changing Austin into something it's not. Yall will be missed!!!

I started going to El Patio as a student in 1977. It was comfort food for my friends and me. Since graduating, I have always made it a point to stop by whenever I can when in town. I took my son and his roommate there for lunch their first week as UT freshmen. The food will be missed, the Joseph family and the atmosphere they created will be sorely missed by so many.
